5 Ingredients to Avoid in Personal Care

Most personal care products seem fine at first glance. They smell good, lather well, and do what they promise. But take a closer look at the ingredients list, and you'll often find a long list of chemical additives. And many of them aren’t as harmless as they sound. At OSOSOP, we consciously avoid these “junk ingredients.” Why? Because your skin and health deserve better.

Here are 5 ingredients to steer clear of – and why:

1. Parabens
Why avoid them: Parabens are used as preservatives to extend shelf life. They can disrupt your hormone balance and are linked to health issues.

On the label as:

  • Methylparaben
  • Propylparaben
  • Ethylparaben
  • Butylparaben
  • Isobutylparaben

2. Synthetic Fragrances ("fragrance" or "parfum")
Why avoid them: The term “fragrance” often hides a cocktail of dozens of chemical substances, including allergens and hormone disruptors. These are usually trade secrets and can cause skin issues or respiratory problems.

On the label as:

  • Fragrance
  • Parfum
  • Aroma
  • Fragrance (may include allergens like: Limonene, Linalool, Geraniol, Citronellol, Coumarin)

3. Sulfates
Why avoid them: Sulfates create lots of foam but strip your skin of its natural oils. This can lead to dryness, irritation, or tightness.

On the label as:

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)
  • Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate
  • TEA Lauryl Sulfate

4. Phthalates
Why avoid them: Used to make scents last longer. Phthalates are linked to hormone disruption and fertility issues.

On the label as:

  • Diethyl Phthalate (DEP)
  • Dimethyl Phthalate (DMP)
  • Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP)
  • Often hidden under "fragrance" or "parfum"

5. PEGs (polyethylene glycol compounds)
Why avoid them: Used as emulsifiers or to help other substances penetrate the skin. They may be contaminated with carcinogens like 1,4-dioxane.

On the label as:

  • PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil
  • PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate
  • PEG-n (e.g., PEG-6, PEG-8, PEG-100)
  • Ceteareth-20
  • Steareth-21

Why OSOSOP avoids all of this
Our mission is simple: junk-free personal care. That means no hidden risks, no empty claims, and no questionable ingredients. What’s in our products is clearly listed on the label – and we can explain it with confidence. Because if it’s not safe enough for daily use, it doesn’t belong in your routine.
